HADES is Melanie Martinez’s most political album to date, with a mix of her typical sexual flair in lyrical description of her political stance showing through. She even reveals sides that people know but don’t acknowledge until it's too late. “Disney Princess” shows this, highlighting the mental health and addiction struggles some people face when they are idolized. How you are essentially signing your life away once you decide to sign on the dotted line of a contract with a major company.
She also tackles the cycle of abuse, being pushed past your breaking point and things that all female-presenting humans face, like “being beautiful enough” There’s also the addiction of being online, cycling back around to her sensual lyrical themes.
My favorite song so far on the album is “The Vatican.” Two honorable mentions are “White Boy with a Gun” and “The Plague.” These two really show how she views different issues that have similar responses.
This album is incredibly captivating and shows a grown-up version of our little Madhatter. Hopefully, you can tell us your favorite songs!
Signing Off,
